Flying SpiceJet

I generally need to travel from Pune to Bangalore at short notices of 3-4 days. With Intel it was on Jet Airways and the full return fare is about Rs 14,000. On Spicejet even at 3-4 days notice I am able to fly for Rs 5000 return. It would be much lower if I am able to plan my travel at least a month in advance. That’s a Rs 9000 saving for approximately 2.5 hours of flying time. Spicejet is a true budget , no frills airline, no newspapers, no TV, no magazines, no food except a bottle of water and a cookie. Even though it is a budget airline, it has not compromised on the basics, brand new air planes, a very user friendly web site, call centre with good diction and fast turnaround time with automated boarding. This has been implemented with a laptop and a barcode scanner connected to the USB port. Even full service airline, Jet Airways manually strikes out seats as passengers start boarding the aircraft. I have to date travelled 5 times and last evening the flight to depart from Bangalore at 5.40 pm was initially delayed by 40 minutes and first informed by sms at 2 pm. I again received an sms at 2.30pm informing me that the flight has been delayed by an additional 30 minutes. This allowed me to have an additional unplanned meeting and reach the airport at the rescheduled time of 6.50 pm. The flight left within 5 minutes of the rescheduled time.

SpiceJet is doing a great job in providing value and customer satisfaction. Note it has no fancy meals like Jet or Kingfisher, but it provides a safe flight in new planes unlike Deccan Air where some first time passengers have sworn they will never fly again, the web based booking system with a clean interface, unlike Kingfisher, which will flash the photo of its chairman on the opening page, it improves turnaround by ensuring the required passengers are on board with barcode scanning and no loading of meals and no time wasted to ensure other frills like newspapers, flight magazines etc. are in place.

I highly recommend Spicejet for whom money and time matters. A good example of how various technologies have been used effectively to provide value to the customer. They are redefining air travel with all the basics to scale in place.

  1. That was a really good post !
In this era of no-time-in-hand,very rarely people share their experiences like this. The analysis added right flavour to it
It will be very useful to us ,as many a times we have to fly down south and will certainly like to save money as well as time.
Hoping for such useful posts from u in future too!

  2. Srikanth views are correct. I have travelled in Spicejet 4 or 5 times and the experience was the same as he stated.

It will be useful the new persons who are planning for the future journey.

  3. Just cannot agree with the above ….

Spicejet, give it a miss if you are tavelling with someone you care and are attending a function that means a lot to you.

Traveled recently with my wife and 11 month old baby out of Chennai for a function in Mumbai which I missed due to a 2 hour outbound delay and then followed it up with a deal clinching 1 hour inbound delay the following day.

Curt, unfriendly, badly trained and immature staff added to the pleasure of spicing up my temper as also the fact that such delay meant that we went almost went hungry due to the ridiculous timing … these nuts do not provide anything else other than the complimentary bottle of water and peanuts even if you are ready to pay for it.

Guess for one to take a sunny view of the delay as Srikant did, one should be flying on the job and then one couldn’t care less or thank the airline for ones own inefficiency.

Spicejet Sucks, I have flown Air Deccan about a dozen times now with little or no hassles, these guys managed to go for the jugular with just one round trip !!!

  4. I flew spicejet for the first time from delhi to bombay. the departure was delayed for a total of 6 hours. (3 hours at the airport, 1 hr in the shuttle bus, and 2 hours in the plane itself. ) While i was in bombay spicejet rep called me to inform me the return was cancelled and booked me a day later on a retyrn in effect leaving me stranded. i had to rebook my return (on jet airways) the next morning. from my experience, i give a big thums down to spice and a big plus to jet airways for reliability.

  5. I have travelled twice in spicejet and the service was good.
However, I’m not very impressed with their cancellation procedure.
There is no refund, and they charge around 600/- per ticket!

  6. Hi,

Heard a lot about spicejet, can somebody get back to me with the ticket fares for up & down from bangalore-goa two ways.

  7. hi ,
I fly regularly from spicejet as my base is in ahmedabad,, but i dont know one thing why do spicejet takes unprofessional people .. one of my worst experience was when i was flying in a delayed flight to bombay from ahmedabad… a duty manager roshab vyas came for an explanation cant even tell english properly…. they should hire more professionals to improve there market value

  8. Hi I am PRO SpiceJet. I saw and realised that most of you been on our flights. Thanks. About delays all I can say that they are not in our hands entrirely. Air Traffic Controller and airport authorities normally decide, especially during fogs, when to allow us to fly. Its very rare when delay casued due to the workings of airlines.
About cancellation charges: When you book a seat and cancel it, we are left with less time to sell it again…if we stop charging cancellation charges, then we may not be able to offer cheap fares also.

  9. how much do u charge towards cancellation of a ticket.
say from bangalore to ahmedabad the fare is 2078 for jul mid, then how much do u refund if we cancel it by june last week.

  10. hi i want to fly to mumbai on 24th of next month.so pls let me know the availibility and charges.Am 19 years old

  11. booked onward journey chennai -kolkata for Apr.4 however need to extend the journey date by 3weeks time .Pl. let me know the procedure and charges applicable.

  12. I am shocked to know that for cancelled flights they do not refund BUT keep money with themselves and you are pushed to use their flight in future…that despite deducting Rs. 600 per seat cancellation charges.

I hope DGCA and Ministry acts on these consumer unfreindly practices.

  13. Spicejet sucks!

They advertise advertise incorrect flight timings. Delhi flight for Kochi which should be starting at 630AM always gets preponed to 430AM. 630AM being a convinient time I booked the tickets and then it gets preponed. No reasons given ofcourse.

Similarly my return flight also got the same treatment. 1130AM to 930AM. To reach the Kochi airport from my village in Kottayam at 1130AM is fine but at 930Am means I need to stay in Kochi the previous day.

This is my second experience with spicejet. If I had enough time and money I would have taken them to court.

    F@#k spicejet.

  14. I haven’t travelled by spicejet. I booked my first ticket a few days back but I had to cancel my programme. But I cannot cancel my ticket in the real sense. Apart from the fact that they will deduct 750 from the fare the balance will also be not refunded but kept with them that too for only one year. They must be making good profit through these ‘transactions’.

  15. Jet Airways sucks, Jet Airways is a racist airline, Jet Airways is an airline Bigot!

Jet Airways is one of the racist airlines in the world.
I was delayed for 3 hours, even when I was early. And after the delay, guess what? They said that they needed to be furnished with supporting documents. Supporting documents that no other passengers have to provide, but myself. Then even when those so-called “supporting documents” are produced and showed to them, they refused to give me my boarding pass, based on the bag I was carrying (I was not using one of those “trolley bags” that people generally bring for holidays). Based on this they thought that I’m some kind of poor chap trying to stray off to another country. That was what they said. This is discrimination!

Furthermore, they vigorously denied me the boarding pass, only after I have confronted them with the fact that I have a beard, therefore a muslim. This is again discrimination!
It’s not that the proof was not there. It was there. I showed them. But they denied. I can only think that this is obviously a biased attitude, based on pure discrimination, not facts. They won’t even accept tangible proof.

I as a muslim, am disgusted by these unfair treatment based on my religious belief.
Truly Jet Airways ought to be ashamed of their racism, and religious discrimination.

  16. Jayanti asked the PRO of Spice Jet Ajay Jasra about cancellation and he just kept quiet. That shows the devious methods of spicejet regarding refunds against cancellations.

  17. I agree, Spicejet airlines are more affordable than any other airways. Apart from offering their passengers with the lowest airfare, Spicejet is also known for its quality flying experience. I choose Spicejet for all my journeys due to their efforts and efficiency. If you want to spend less and fly comfortably, choose Spicejet.
