Letter to Narayan Murthy : You will join Politics

Dear Mr Murthy

I am sick of Rediff, Business Today etc etc that keeps posting articles on Infosys, Narayan Murthy, Nilekani etc etc… we have to move on and you should role model by setting an example. Instead of moving on, you are trying to hang on to anything that is possible, by creating additional direcor positions to be around. This proves you are a control freak and you can’t let things go. What Gandhian species do you belong to ? The problem with you and your respected wife is that you have become PR-maniacs. With every paisa you donate there has to be some sho sha, both of you don’t pass a photo, pr quote or article opportunity. Btw we friends have had a bet that you will join politics in the next 3-5 years. I have bet you will. This inspite of you making multiple direct statements you will not join but many indirect hints are available. Hints like Lee Kuan Yew requesting you to join politics and drive change.

Counter to what people write about Infosys, I have written on the Infosys Bubble.

Please don’t get me wrong, I admire Infosys, but there is a time, a place, don’t flog it forever, it gets boring after a while. There are many companies that are struggling to make it and be the next Infosys. Your past experience will be invaluable to them.

  1. Its not like everyone makes up their mind to join politics in a day. Its not an easy decision. He is probably debating in his mind and weighing the need for the country for him to join politics v/s his capability to handle the complexities of politics. Publicity mongering is by itself not at all bad. We need to use PR to market a good product, even if it is for a non-profit cause.

  2. I also subscribe to your bet that NRN Murthy will join politics.
It is time to say thanks to exporters like Infosys and create success stories that address domestic problems and create prosperity from it.

The success story is more likely to happen if only Web2.0 bubble holds up unlike Web1.0.

  3. I believe that people like NRM can contribute to the society at large even without joining politics………as u said there are many companies waiting to become the next Infosys .he could probably mentor them and show them the direction ……those companies shall gain a lot from his experience …………I think that would be a huge contribution to the society and the economic development of India …..I believe that though politics is a great way to serve your country …….., it is not the only way ……..significant contributions can be made in so many different ways…….. as for his utilizing every opportunity of getting publicity I don’t think there is any thing wrong in that , ……….I would welcome every Indian to seize all opportunity to get popularity by doing the same volume of work which the Murthy family does ……..the work is important , if popularity comes its good ………and if NRM does n’t attract attention who else will??

  5. well i think people like mr. murthy should join politics, himself being an entreprenuer will definetly be a boon to the country. the time is absolutely perfect for him, with him resigning and his company being in the state it is. he is a role model and should get into politics to instill some faith among people that something can be done to the country, which is being adminstered horifically.

  6. what is wrong if mr. murthy join politics. let him, as long as he thinks that
he will clean up the system, to the possible extent he can and only hope that in the process, he should not corrupt himself into the system.

  7. more than whether he wil join politics or not….i personally think he should join…….and work towards betterment of our society….bt ya this task is nt easy….to be in between those corrupt politics and think for the society….he needs a dedicated support from we people….so what do u say people….r u going to support him???

  8. Infosys is nothing but Brand NRN + NILEKANI and ofcourse the STOCK EXchange Hype, while i personally admire both these indian TYCOONS , i do not understand why do they preach VALUES ( In their Logo ) when the comapny they associate themselves to is a does exactly the opposite.

I am an Ex- Employee of INFY and truely had the worst time (2 YRS) of my life in there. Its a place where Junior and Mid Level Employees are treated like flies . Less Pay , Poor Growth , Bias and regular Policy change ! their polocies are like Clothes ! They follow it when it come to their advantage and change it when it does not .

I have seen Loads of such examples and was compelled to quit. To top it all the management is probably the most arrogant management in the corporate India . They are not open to any feed back and people who gather guts to speak out are “FIRED” like a friend of mine ! (The famous Japnese Prover ” The Nail That Sticks out Gets Hammered” ).

I Wish People who want to join Infy the best of luck for their careers.

  9. Can anybdy tell me a website from where I can trace the important decisions that N R naryan Murthy made in his tenure at Infy”.

    Amit Kalia.
